Polls Ahead, Karnataka Ex-Minister Accused Of Sex Scandal Meets B Bommai

A day after accusing Congress state president DK Shivakumar of being involved in a conspiracy behind the sex scandal that led to his resignation as minister in 2021, BJP leader Ramesh Jarkiholi on Tuesday held a lengthy discussion with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, sources said. Jarkiholi had on Monday demanded that the sex scandal case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation as a "big racket" is involved in which politicians and bureaucrats are honey trapped and blackmailed. Calling for the arrest of the young woman in the case and her accomplices including two people from Mandya, the BJP MLA had charged that Shivakumar was behind the scandal. "Today, Ramesh Jarkiholi had a long meeting with the Chief Minister. He met him at his residence for 10 minutes, then travelled with him in the flight till Hubballi," sources close to the Chief Minister told PTI. Court's Contempt Warning To Top Karnataka Officer Over Graveyard Order

The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday warned that it would be forced to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the Chief Secretary if the State fails to implement its order of providing land for graveyards in all villages and towns within two weeks. A Division Bench of the court is hearing a civil contempt petition filed by one Mohammed Iqbal who has alleged that the State has failed to follow an earlier order of the High Court in 2019 that had directed it to provide land for graveyards in all villages within six weeks. In September 2022, the State had informed the High Court in a compliance report that it had handed over 23,815 burial grounds to local authorities and the process of handing over 3,765 burial grounds was still pending. The government was also in the process of identifying and purchasing land for burial grounds in 516 places where there were no government land available. Visakhapatnam Will Be Andhra Capital, Chief Minister Jagan Reddy Asserts

Visakhapatnam will be Andhra Pradesh's capital, and Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy will shift there "in the months to come", he announced today, apparently sticking to the three-capital plan — other two being Kurnool and the existing capital Amaravati — despite the High Court having ruled last year that it can't make a law for that. The case is pending in the Supreme Court on an appeal by Mr Reddy's YSRCP government. Mr Reddy, who made the assertion about Visakhapatnam while marketing an investment summit to be held there, has consistently favoured the coastal city as the Executive Capital. He has said in the past too that he would work from there.  "Here I am, to invite you, to Visakhapatnam, which is going to be our capital in the days to come," he said, announcing the global summit scheduled for March 3 and 4. He did not set out a timeline, but added, "I myself will be shifting over to Visakhapatnam in the months to come." When Telanga...

DMK Slams BJP Tamil Nadu Chief Over Its Leader's Temple Demolition Speech

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu has slammed BJP's state chief K Annamalai for tweeting a short video clip of its leader TR Baalu's speech on temple demolition, accusing it of selectively cutting out a part of his longer speech to make him sound like he took pride in demolishing temples. While in the portion that Mr Annamalai shared, Mr Baalu appears to brag about temple demolition in his constituency, the complete speech shows him explaining his model -- how as union minister he had rebuilt temples, that were demolished for highway projects, after convincing devotees. The DMK has called the former IPS officer "cut and paste Annamalai". "I've demolished a 100-year-old temple, this same TR Baalu in one place at my constituency demolished Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati temples on the GST road. I know this won't fetch votes. But I also know how to get votes," Mr Baalu could be heard saying in the clip tweeted by the BJP leader. DMK men take pride in dem...

Goa BJP Leader's 'Mahabharata' Comparison Over Karnataka River Dispute

Former Goa minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dayanand Mandrekar on Friday equated Karnataka's attitude on the Mahadayi river dispute with that of Duryodhana from the epic "Mahabharata", who refused to give any territory to the Pandavas and "bullied everyone". The former water resources minister was addressing a gathering of former legislators on the Mahadayi water diversion issue, where Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar was present. "Goa and Karnataka are neighbours. In our village, we maintain good relationship with our neighbours as we rely on them in good and bad times," said Mr Mandrekar, who was a minister in the Manohar Parrikar-led cabinet between 2012 and 2017. Amid Row And A Ban, Congress In Kerala Screens BBC Series On PM Modi

The Congress unit in Kerala is screening the controversial BBC documentary on PM Narendra Modi in Thiruvananthapuram today even though the central government has banned it in India saying it's false and motivated "propaganda". The public showing of the two-part series — which speaks about the 2002 Gujarat riots and PM Modi's politics, among other things — is one of many such events organised by several Opposition parties and free-speech activists across the country. The Congress is in the opposition in Kerala, too, but the ruling CPM has also taken a stand against banning the documentary. In Kerala, the documentary is at the centre of row even within the Congress as veteran leader AK Antony's son Anil K Antony recently quit the party alleging "intolerant calls to retract a tweet" in which he had defied the Congress stand and called the BBC documentary a "dangerous precedent". In response to Anil Antony's argument that it undermines India...

The CBI has asked Lok Sabha MP from Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh Avinash Reddy to appear for questioning on January 28 in connection with the killing of Vivekananda Reddy, the younger brother of late chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, in 2019, officials said Wednesday. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan, the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam party, today offered unconditional support to the Congress candidate for the Erode East assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu. Asked whether the move was a shift in his strategy, considering that he had been critical of the ruling DMK and the Congress, Kamal Haasan told NDTV, "There is nothing called compromise when it comes to people. I am a centrist. Ideology shouldn't impede service to people". Talks about Kamal Haasan partnership with the Congress gained ground after the MNM leader was seen marching with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra in Delhi recently. BBC's "India: The Modi Question" was screened in several parts of the state on Tuesday, prompting protest marches by the BJP's Yuva Morcha against the same. Tensions prevailed in some areas of Kerala including the state capital where police had to use water cannons and tear gas to disperse Yuva Morcha protestors. Yuva Morcha activists also gathered at Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram where the documentary was screened. "There Can't Be Different...": Kerala Governor On States' Borrowing Limits

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Monday said recent measures to curtail borrowing capacities of the states have constrained their efforts in various social and infrastructure sectors. Reading out the policy document of the state government in the Assembly, the Governor said while fiscal discipline has to be enforced, there cannot be different yardsticks for the Centre and the states. Mr Khan said that for the body politic of the nation to be strong, it needs strong limbs and since states have heavy responsibilities in the social sectors, their fiscal position has to be strong. "Recent measures to curtail the borrowing limits of the States constrain the scope of their interventions in the health, education and infrastructural sectors. "While fiscal discipline has to be enforced in right earnest, there cannot be different yardsticks for state governments, which are not made applicable to the Union Government," the Governor said in the policy address marking the co...
