The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 8, nearly a week after its normal onset date of June 1. A third-year medical student was found dead at Vishwa Bharathi Medical College in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, police said on Monday. It differed with the Trial Court which had convicted a 38-year old man for 'causing grievous hurt' for such an incident. It also reduced the sentence from seven years imprisonment to three years. The High Court reasoned that the accused had no intention of murdering the victim and the injury was caused during a fight. "There was a quarrel between the accused and complainant on the spot. During that quarrel, the accused chose to squeeze the testicles. Therefore, it cannot be said that the accused came with an intention or with preparation to commit murder. If at all he has prepared or attempted to commit murder, he could have brought some deadly weapons with him in order to commit murder," it said. It was a moment of pride for Sub-Inspector BS Venkatesh when he handed over the charge of Mandya's central police station in Karnataka to none other than his 24-year-old daughter BS Versha, now a Sub-Inspector. Mr Venkatesh had joined the police force in 2010 under the quota for ex-servicemen quota after serving in the Army for over 15 years. His daughter, Ms Versha is a 2020-21 batch police officer. A family court judge's vehicle was badly damaged near Thiruvalla here by a litigant who was unhappy with the way the marital dispute between him and his wife was being adjudicated, the police said. The 55-year-old man got angry during the proceedings and after coming out from the court, took out his rage on the judge's car that was parked inside the Thiruvalla court complex here on Wednesday. The litigant smashed all the windows of the car, with the windscreen barely left attached to the vehicle. There were dents all over the body of the car too, according to visuals of it shown on TV channels. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah amid a row over the state rice scheme. A 22-year-old woman is in a critical condition after a 27-year-old man she called uncle, repeatedly stabbed her for rejecting his proposal for a relationship, police said today. The incident has been reported in Cyberabad area of Hyderabad. The accused, Kotha Ganesh, works with Zomato as a delivery partner and suspected that the woman was in a relationship with somebody else, police said. He has been taken into custody. According to a police statement, they received information about the attack around 9 pm. On reaching the spot, they found Ganesh attacking the woman, police said. The Supreme Court today allowed the shifting of arrested Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji to a private hospital. Balaji, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, was undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Chennai. The Enforcement Directorate, which arrested Balaji in connection with an alleged cash-for-jobs scam in the state transport department, had moved the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order. The high court had allowed the shifting of Balaji. A Supreme Court vacation bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice M M Sundresh noted that the petition was still pending in the high court and asked the ED to approach that court. "The observations made by the high court was in an interim order and any oral observation made by this court shall have no bearing on the case," the bench said while posting the matter for hearing on July 4. Arrested Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji will undergo an open-heart surgery at a private hospital here on June 21, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Tuesday, a week after the beleaguered DMK leader was advised a bypass surgery. The surgery will be performed early on Wednesday, Mr Subramanian told reporters here. "Since the surgery has to be mandatorily performed on Senthil Balaji, it will be done tomorrow," he said.
